As businesses increasingly rely on third-party vendors, vendor risk has quietly become one of the most significant and least visible sources of operational and cybersecurity exposure. From IT service providers and cloud platforms to payroll processors and Software as a Service (SaaS) vendors, third parties often require deep access to sensitive systems and data. When a vendor experiences a breach, the impact rarely stops with that organization. It often extends to customers and, in some cases, their customers as well.

Scenario: when everything stops
A panicked call from a client: “Nothing is working. Our servers are down.” Monitoring quickly confirms the incident: no virtual machines are responding. The analysis reveals what was feared: the virtual machine files have been encrypted by ransomware, and a ransom note is clearly visible.

If you’ve ever asked an IT company whether they’re proactive, you probably got the answer: "Of course we’re proactive!" But ask five different IT companies what that actually means, and you’ll get five different explanations, most of them misleading. For years, "proactive IT" has been sold as simply doing patching, antivirus, and backups. These tasks matter, but they are the bare minimum of responsible IT operations. They don’t reduce interruptions, align technology with business goals, or turn IT into a strategic advantage. They’re just hygiene.

By now, we’ve all heard of two-factor authentication (2FA) — those one-time security codes you get to log into your accounts. Yes, it can be annoying, but it’s also the easiest cybersecurity tool you can set up today, reducing your risk of being hacked by 99%. But what if I told you that’s just the beginning?

Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly shifting from experimentation to practical application, especially for small to mid-sized businesses (SMBs) looking to eliminate revenue leakage, reduce operational chaos, and minimize human error. In 2026, three AI technologies are emerging as true game-changers—solutions that address long-standing operational challenges that have quietly slowed growth and drained profitability for years.

In many Canadian SMBs, IT is still viewed as an expense rather than a strategic investment. Yet today, businesses depend entirely on technology to operate. Over the past 15 to 20 years, IT has become a core pillar of operations—without budgets and decision-making keeping pace.
